Sidebar Modification using widgets

Modifying sidebar using widgets

Blog themes have what is known as a sidebar. It is used to include tools such as calendar, recommended links, links to files per month, categories, among others. Using the widgets you can add items to the sidebar of your blog without having to worry about modifying the codes. In that sense they are really very useful and powerful.
To handle the widgets of your blog follow these instructions:

1. Under "Appearance" in the menu, select the "Widgets":

This page is divided into two main columns: available widgets and inactive widgets
Among the available widgets are:

· Delicious: If you have an account in this social bookmarking system you can include your most recent links.

· Page: To include links to the pages you have created

· Calendar: Calendar with links to the days where you have published articles

· Files: To include the file for months of your entries

· Links: To include the list of links or blogroll

· Goal: Provide information for syndication of your articles and comments via RSS.

· Search: Allows visitors to search the content of your blog.

· Recent Entries: I do not find much use, unless you only include two or three entries on the main page.

· Tag cloud: Well that, blog tags in cloud format

· Categories: A list of the categories of your blog with direct link to the entries

· Text Recent Entries: Tag cloud: · Categories: Tex: This widget is to include any text or html code.

· RSS: Using this widget you can include the RSS feed of a site or blog and the recent entries of the site will appear. If you do not know much about RSS you may not understand the meaning of this tool but I assure you that sooner or later you will give much use. I use it to include the entries of blog planets around a topic.

· Recent Comments: To include recent comments.

 · Box.net: To add files that you have lodged in Box.net

· Cloud Category: To add the cloud categories

· Akismet: To display spam statistics

· Blog Statistics

· Top clicks: To include entries with more hits

· Most viewed post: Entries with the highest number of visits

· Flickr: To show photos of your account on Flickr

· Authors: List of the authors of the blog

To add a widget you must drag it to the right column and place it in the area you want. Some widgets allow you to edit it to set it according to your preferences. For example, in the case of categories you can set the title, which shows the number of entries by categories and if you want to show the hierarchy.

To remove a widget, all you have to do is edit it and click "Delete".

If all widgets are removed, the items that were by default in the sidebar will reappear.
Select the "View site" link so you can see that the sidebar of your blog has the elements that you have set up as widgets. Some do not appear because there is no content in them but as soon as you include something they will appear automatically.

Task: Well now you can add the desired widgets in the sidebar of the blog. Depending on the theme, you can have more than one sidebar. Play with the widgets!
